What is music like at Speyside High School?

In class time, you can sing or play music from different styles.  You can choose instruments and/or voice and develop your skills.  There is a choice of music and songs for you to learn and perform by yourself or as part of a group.  You will also have the opportunity to compose your own pieces and songs in different ways using instruments, recording equipment and/or computers.  We will listen to music in different styles and learn concepts associated with the music we are listening to.  We also listen to other peoples's performances and identify concepts in what we hear.

We have additional instrumental lessons in school for violin, cello, woodwind, brass and percussion.  Our instrumental teachers visit us on different days.  There may be the opportunity for you to learn an orchestral instrument.  We also have a guitar teacher who visits us on a Monday.  All of these extra lessons are optional and a charge will apply.  The lessons last for approximately thirty minutes and are timetabled on a rota so that you don't miss the same class each week.

There are many opportunities for you to gain confidence in performing on stage.  You can choose to perform at the Christmas Concert if you wish and at the other performances we have in school.  We also go out into our community and give performances there.  Our ceilidh band, Speyside Fiddlers, play at our Lunchtime Ceilidhs in school.  We have lots of pupils taking part in the ceilidhs and people from the Lunch Club and the community join in too.

You may wish to join some of the extra curricular groups on offer, such as the Orchestra, Vocal Group, Glee Club, Ceilidh Band, String Group, Woodwind Group etc.  We will have a vocal ensemble for our more experienced singers.  Our school show this year is Joseph and we are planning to stage this in December.  You may also with to form your own band or take part in the band/group organised by the Community Development Team.  They rehearse on a Wednesday after school and they perform at open mic sessions in The Loft at Keith along with young people from other schools.  There may also be the opportunity for you to join a trip to see a concert, an opera or a musical, depending on what is on at the time.  We saw an opera, The Barber of Seville, in Inverness in November and we are going to see a musical, Chicago, in Aberdeen in September.

Our young people achieve great things.  Many pupils go onto study music at college or university.  Recently, two girls were selected for the National Youth Choir of Scotland.  Another pupil played at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow with the Cairngorm Ceilidh Trail.  Another has made the Top 10 UK Young Drummer of the Year.  Some have holidays at Easter or in the summer where they spend a week playing in an orchestra.

We offer opportunities for you while you are with us at Speyside High School.  Grab these opportunities!
