Speyside High School Library

The library is open during class time for individual pupil and class use.  The library is used for borrowing/returning books, research using books or computers, general computer use, sitting tests and exams. There are often many different groups of pupils using the library for different purposes at the same time, therefore it is important that pupils work quietly, showing respect for other library users.

In addition, S5 and S6 pupils use the library for timetabled library study.  For guidelines on using the library for this purpose, please click here.

The library has 8 computers for pupils and staff use.  These can be booked in advance and this is advised during busy times of the academic year.

The computers are available for reacreational use at lunchtimes only but priority will be given to pupils who wish to use them for classwork or homework.

(The library sells a small selection of stationery, including floppy discs.)

Lunchtimes in the Library

Inter-House Quiz - on the last Friday of every month, pupils from all year groups are invited to come along and earn points for their house.  A trophy will be awarded to the winner in June.

Reading Club - on Wednesdays, members of the group meet in the library at 1.15 pm (or 1.50 pm with a packed lunch).  We discuss books, play games, watch DVDs and take part in the Grampian Childrens Book Award.  If you enjoy reading, please come along.

The Grampian Childrens Book Award - from November to May, members of the Reading Club, along with other S1 - S3 pupils in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray, read and reviewed the short-listed books for the award, took part in competitions and finally, voted for the winner. On May 14th, the Club, along with S1 pupils, attended the award ceremony in Elgin where the winner was revealed.

Nearly 300 pupils from all over Grampian filled Elgin Town Hall. Although none of the short listed authors were able to attend, pupils had a fantastic afternoon as they listened to Catherine MacPhail, Keith Charters, Anne MacLeod and Gillian Philip talk about their books and their writing.  Pupils had an opportunity to get their books signed and talk to the authors at the end.  Speyside High School pupils were also among the day's winners.  Katherine Duty, S1, won a raffle prize (a fleece donated by the publishers of Ways to Live Forever) and Isla van der Heiden, S2, won 2nd prize in the poster competition and also gave an excellent reading from Lucky Star.

GCBA skullduggery

The winner of the Grampian Children's Book Award 2009 is Derek Landy, for his book Skulduggery Pleasant.   In his acceptance message he said,

"For all of you who voted for Skulduggery, thank you so much, I really appreciate it. For all of you who didn’t vote for Skulduggery, allow me a moment to be quietly smug. Thanks to everyone for this honour. I always wanted to win an award named after a mountain, and finally I have achieved my dream. Thank you."
