Parental Involvement Act 2006

There is new legislation, the Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement Act) 2006, to encourage and support you to become further involved in your child's education.

We know that parents and carers have a vital role to play in their children's learning. This new law aims to ensure that everyone has the support and encouragement they need to be effectively involved. Such effective involvement is the responsibility of both parents and staff. Parents have a responsibility to support their school and their children's education. There are many ways which you can do this. We very much want to work with you to find ways that suit everyone's needs and circumstances.

Under the Parental Involvement Act, as a parent of a child in attendance at Speyside High, you are automatically part of what is called the Parent Forum for the school. This means that you have a right to be involved in deciding what type of parent representation we should have in the school. The term used for Parent representation in the Act is Parent Council. This is a smaller group of parents who would work with the school to represent the views of all the parents at the school. As of August 2007, Parent Councils will replace School Boards.

Our next step will be to take forward discussions to consider the new arrangements for parental involvement. You will be asked your views and given the chance to take part in discussions over the next few months.   Your views are important so please let us know what you think.

If you have access to the internet, there is more information about the Parental Involvement Act and advice on how you can support your child's learning on the Scottish Executive website at: www.parentzonescotland.gov.uk

You can also contact our School Board Chair, Pierre Masson, by leaving a message with the Clerk to the School Board Miss Main on 01340 871522 or fiona.main29@moray-edunet.gov.uk
